Our vicar writes

Hi and welcome to St Saviour’s. My name is Chris, and in the picture you can see my wife Jenny, our daughters Rose and Saoirse, and our son Jack. Jenny and I came to St Saviour’s in 2015 and love it. The area of Wendell Park is a thriving community of singles and young families, as well as people who have lived here a long time.

The church has stood here since 1894 and was referred to originally as ‘the church in the fields’, as it was surrounded by fields, although that is hard to imagine now! Find out more about our story here.

Our church, St Saviour’s, is made up of a growing number of young adults and young families. We have a load of children, which is great, and we have a youth church for them which focuses on teaching stories and parables of Jesus, and key events of the Bible. Their Sunday sessions include a lot of creativity, which they present to us all at the end of the service!

We have a growing number of young people – in fact, a large proportion of our church now is 19-35, which we love. That means people hang out, go to lunch or dinner, and get involved in each other’s lives. Many churches say ‘we are a friendly bunch’, but above and beyond friendly, we take friendship seriously here.

Now to try to explain where we are theologically! We are orthodox, we believe and love scripture, and we are sacramental, which means that we share communion every week unless we have a baptism. We believe in the work and power of the Holy Spirit. We have a worship band who lead us in contemporary and classical worship songs, and we offer prayer ministry following our talks.

We love to deepen our faith in silence and contemplation. Our midweek church group is made up of young adults who do Night Prayer together on Tuesdays with incense and candlelight.

We have a rule of life which explains more of who we are. Do take a look at it.

I once asked a younger adult member why do they come to St Saviours and she simply said, ’It feels real.’ We are real people with a real and living faith, and not pretending to have it all together. Our strengths as a church are good talks, good worship, good community. We believe this is a place where your faith will deepen and your relationships can grow. We love Jesus and we seek to walk with each other in gentleness and truth. You are welcome to join us on the journey.

Love, Chris
